Acoustic and psychoacoustic aspects of vocal vibrato

چکیده

This article reviews research on vocal vibrato and related phenomena. As the vibrato corresponds to a modulation of the fundamental frequency, the primary acoustic attributes are the@equency and amplitude of this modulation as well as its waveform. The range of variation of these parameters in classical operatic singing are discussed as well as the boundaries to similar phenomena such as tremolo and trill. Also considered are some perceptual attributes, such as the effect of the vibrato to glue spectrum partials together to timbrul gestalts, the efect on vowel intelligibility, and the relationship between the frequency modulation and the pitch perceived.

Acoustic and perceptual effects of vocal training in amateur male singing

This paper reports our investigation of the acoustic effects of vocal training for amateur singers and of the contribution of those effects to perceived vocal quality. Recording singing voices before and after vocal training and then analyzing changes in acoustic parameters with a focus on features unique to singing voices, we found that two different F0 fluctuations (vibrato and overshoot) and...

Effects of vocal training on the acoustic parameters of the singing voice.

Vocal training (VT) has, in part, been associated with the distinctions in the physiological, acoustic, and perceptual parameters found in singers' voices versus the voices of nonsingers. This study provides information on the changes in the singing voice as a function of VT over time. Fourteen college voice majors (12 females and 2 males; age range, 17-20 years) were recorded while singing, on...

Vocal tremor and vibrato in the same person: acoustic and electromyographic differences.

The goal of this case study was to measure and describe differences between vocal vibrato and essential tremor of the voice in one individual who exhibited both types of modulation. Recordings of spoken and sung vowels produced by the same individual at three effort levels were examined via analysis of acoustic and laryngeal electromyographic (LEMG) signals. Modulation rate, periodicity, and sp...

The Vocal Tract in Singing

Precise control of the vocal tract configuration is of critical importance for producing the desired acoustic characteristics of singing. The pattern of acoustic resonances generated by a given vocal tract shape influences vowel identity, voice quality (timbre), and, to some degree, the spectral characteristics of the voice excitation source itself. This chapter is broadly focused on how the vo...

Session 2aMU: Aeroacoustics of Wind Instruments and Human Voice I 2aMU8. Vibrato rate variability in three professional singing styles: Opera, Rock and Brazilian country

Vibrato is one of the most expressive aesthetic characteristics of singing voice. Indicative of good voice quality is typical of lyrical singing but it is also found in others styles of popular music. Acoustically, vibrato is defined as a long-term periodic modulation of the fundamental frequency. It occurs as a result of the laryngeal muscular system and is comprised of 3 main parameters: rate...
